Mechanics of materials is the field of engineering knowledge dealing with the analysis of strains and stress in simple structural elements. It covers issues from the field of mechanics, mathematics and experiments.
The course is taught on the first and second-cycle studies. It has the form of lectures, classes and laboratory.
Finite element method
Finite element method (FEM) is a numerical method used to solve engineering problems. During the design process it gives the possibility to determine displacements and stress distribution in structural elements. The method is widely used for conducting numerical experiments in scientific researches.

Elements of structural optimization
Optimization is a process which aims at obtaining the best results with respect to chosen criteria and in a given conditions. The procedure of optimal design of structures allows to obtain the solution which is the best taking into account the selected criteria. Such solution is seldom possible using a conventional approach. The process of optimal design compels the engineer to define the decision variables, objective function and constraints imposed on a structure and this way enables a better understanding of the problem.
